Study Finds Vaping Is Becoming Increasingly Popular, Especially Among 20-Somethings

A study has found that 44 percent of the people who vape are in their 20s and early 30s. Guess this means vaping is now officially cool?

The number of cigarette smokers has decreased significantly in the United States, from 42% in 1965 to 19% of adults who smoked cigarettes in 2010. A GfK MRI Survey of the American Consumer found that smoking e-cigarettes – which use batteries to warm nicotine and produce satisfying vapors – has become increasingly popular. Forty four percent of the people who vape are Millennials (those born between 1977 and 1994), individuals who are in their 20s and early 30s. The study also found that 56% of e-cigarette smokers are male and 44% are female.

E-cigarette popularity has doubled over the last few years

A February 2013 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that about 21% of adults who smoked regular cigarettes also used e-cigarettes in 2011, a significant increase from about 10% who vaped in 2010. Over the period of 2010 to 2011, use of e-cigarettes rose among both men and women, non-Hispanic Whites, people between 45 and 54 years old, people living in the South, as well as among both current and former smokers. The study found that in both 2010 and 2011, use of e-cigarettes was significantly higher among current smokers than those who never smoked or former smokers.

More people are using ecigs to stop smoking

Vaping has become a popular method for quitting cigarettes, even though e-cigarettes are not marketed as smoking cessation devices. Of smokers who tried to quit the habit in the past 12 months, 8% of them tried to do so with e-cigarettes, which was second only to cold turkey, which was at 11%. Other quitting methods were patches (6%), pills (5%), and gum (4%).

Young people are leading the way

Although vapers range in age from 18 to 108, as this study shows, 20-somethings are clearly spearheading the movement. And this makes sense. Millenials care about their health and financial future in a way that perhaps previous generations haven’t. Coming of age in a time of financial instability has forced them to mature quicker. They know smoking is an expensive and dangerous habit and they’re educated consumers; they’ve read the research on ecigs and have chosen to ignore the negative propaganda surrounding it. They see vaping as a better alternative to smoking and they’re not going to let sensationalized news stories tell them otherwise. Thank you, Millenials! We appreciate your support.
